Alta Vista Alizarine Single Vineyard Malbec 2015
Alta Vista Alizarine Single Vineyard Malbec 2015Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza 0119834 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $60.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : As was the case with the other single-vineyard wine from Luján de Cuyo, I also found more freshness and balance in the 2015 Malbec Alizarine than in the 2014. There is less alcohol and more balanced acidity. As the vinification and aging was the same (concrete and 66% new barrels), the differences are due to the vintage, but I think this is more about the vineyard, Las Compuertas, a traditional zone that is being eaten by the city, the cost of land for real estate is too much of a temptation that is hard to resist. The year was cooler, and the wine is fresher and had less alcohol than the 2014 I tasted next to it. Concentration with harmony. This should age nicely in bottle. Drink date: 2019-2025. Score - 94. Giant Steps Applejack Pinot Noir 2018
Giant Steps Applejack Pinot Noir 2018Single vineyard, Yarra Valley, Victoria 0010774 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $60.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : Sourced from vineyards at 984-feet in elevation in the Upper Yarra, the nose of this wine is intensely reminiscent of truffles, but there's plenty of fruit, florals and spice, too, expressed in tones of red berries, roses, white pepper, dried herbs and minerals. Beautifully nuanced and textured on the palate, it's both broad and laser-focused, slinking with savory tannins, crunchy red fruit and herbs. The finish is long and complex, making it impossible not to take another sip. It's delicious now, but it could cellar until 2029. Editors' Choice. Score - 95. Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2013
Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2013Eden Valley, South Australia 0426395 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $215.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : 83% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc, 5% merlot, matured in French hogsheads (42% new) for 18 months before blending. Cabernet from the Eden Valley has its own cool personality - and absolute authority. It is blackcurrant rather than cassis, with tannins that are firm but not dry, and an elusive touch of mint. The franc and merlot have helped the cabernet show a bit of love, the French oak likewise. All up, a wine of class and length. Drink by: 2038. Score - 96. The tannins and oak are built into the wine like an inlaid checkerboard table created by a master craftsman with decades of experience. Like John Duval. Special value. Drink by: 2056. Score - 98. Kay Brothers Amery Vineyard Block 6 Shiraz 2016
Kay Brothers Amery Vineyard Block 6 Shiraz 2016McLaren Vale, South Australia 0598870 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $108.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : Block 6 is east-facing, the 124yo vines running north-south. Hand-picked, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, 10 days on skins, matured for 23 months in puncheons (40% new). The most remarkable feature of the wine is its medium-bodied elegance, with dark cherry and blackberry fruits supported by soft tannins. A tour de force. Special value. Drink by: 2046. Score - 97. Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz 2017
Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz 2017Hunter Valley, New South Wales 0237941 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $250.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : Fruit sourced from the Old Hill, Old Paddock and Rosehill Vineyards. Matured in 20% new large format French oak for 14 months. This is a truly sensational release. It has flow, fruit and form, but the drama is in the finish, which shoots majestically into the distance. This wine pretty much has it all. It fans classic regional red flavours across the palate; its core is strong and pure; its balance would do a yoga instructor proud; and it has X-factor up to its eyeballs. Drink by: 2050. Score - 98. Torbreck RunRig 2016
Torbreck RunRig 2016Barossa Valley, South Australia 0097204 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $299.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Viognier made just prior to bottling, the 2016 RunRig is a complete masterpiece. It kicks off with elegant notes of pencil shavings accenting blueberries and blackberries on the nose, then shows incredible, palate-staining intensity of fruit in the mouth. It's full-bodied, plush and velvety without being unstructured and manages to be fruit-forward yet savory on the long-lasting finish, where it picks up hints of mocha and black olives. This should be drinkable with pleasure throughout its entire two-decade life (it may live longer from cold cellars or in larger formats), but if I were lucky enough to have a bottle or two, I'd try the first one about 10 years out. Scheduled for June 2019 release. Drink date: 2019-2035. Score - 100. (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Feb. 28, 2019)

13th Street Grande Cuvée Blanc de Noirs Sparkling 2013
13th Street Grande Cuvée Blanc de Noirs Sparkling 2013Traditional method, Whitty Vineyard, VQA Creek Shores, Niagara Peninsula 0361394 (XD) 12% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $59.95 per btl TASTING NOTE : Here's a mature, nicely elegant, nuanced and complex traditional method sparkler based entirely on single vineyard pinot noir, aged five years on the lees. The nose shows well integrated baked apple, hazelnut, sourdough and cedary spice. The palate is mid-weight, with almost creamy mousse, very good acidity, and dry, nutty, slightly bitter pistachio shell finish. The length is excellent to outstanding. Score - 93. Luis Felipe Edwards Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Luis Felipe Edwards Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2014DO Colchagua Valley 0015622 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $81.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : This is the first version of LFE's most ambitious cabernet. It's from a selection of high-altitude vineyards planted on hills in Puquillay, 900 meters above sea level in 2005. The idea, according to winemaker Nicolás Bizzarri, was to try to prove that it was possible to make a Colchagua cabernet that rivals the best in Chile. And that's what they've done. The wine was aged in barrels for 18 months and then spent another 2 years in the bottle. It's a cabernet that's focused on fruit flavors. Unlike other top Chilean cabernets, it doesn't have the mentholated notes (like some from Maipo Alto) but instead concentrates on the fruity and earthy flavors in a wine that has medium body but tremendous structure. Its tannins latch on to the palate and easily hold up all of those fruit flavors. Score - 96. (Descorchados, 2020)

With four years on lees before disgorgement, it's layered, complex and wonderfully fresh, with bready, citrus-edged flavours and wonderful palatelength. 2019-26 Score - 96. Bollinger La Grande Année Brut Champagne 2012
Bollinger La Grande Année Brut Champagne 2012AC 0145169 (XD) 12% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $195.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : Disgorged in July 2019, Bollinger's 2012 Brut La Grande Année is showing well, offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of crisp yellow orchard fruit, fresh peach, orange oil, toasted walnuts and dried apricot that's still quite reserved with less than a year on cork. Full-bodied, deep and muscular, the 2012 is blockier and broader-shouldered than its 2008 predecessor, with a weightier and even more concentrated palate built around a bright spine of acidity, concluding with a chalky finish that carries appreciably dry extract. This isn't quite as elegant as the exquisite 2008, but it is a superb effort and obviously built to age. Drink date: 2024-2050. Score - 95. (William Kelley, robertparker.com, March 12, 2020)

Cave de Tain Les Hauts du Fief Crozes-Hermitage 2017
Cave de Tain Les Hauts du Fief Crozes-Hermitage 2017AC 0958843 (XD) 13% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $47.00 per btl TASTING NOTE : The smaller production 2017 Crozes-Hermitage Les Hauts Du Fief comes from a selection of older vines and was all destemmed and spent 15 months in once- and twice-used 400-liter barrels. It has a spicy, complex, yet also sexy profile to go with lots of mulled red and black fruits, fruitcake, and dried garrigue aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied Crozes has the forward, plush style of the vintage yet backs it up with plenty of underlying density and tannins. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade. Maturity 2020-2033. Score - 94. (jebdunnuck.com, Dec. 12, 2019)
