Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2022
Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2022Yarra Valley, Victoria 0243154 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $45.00 TASTING NOTE : An even split of upper and lower Yarra fruit. Whole-bunched pressed and wild fermented in 15% new French puncheons. Around 5% mlf. A light, bright green gold. Pure fruited with an attractive nose of just ripened orchard and stone fruits, pink grapefruit and orange blossom. A hint of matchstick and just-baked ginger snaps. Concentrated and lithe at the same time, Giant Step's calling card is just as good, if not better than the super 2021 release. Drink from: 2022. Drink by: 2027. Special Value. Score - 95. Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023
Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023Yarra Valley, Victoria 0032575 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $45.00 TASTING NOTE : A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra fruit; 35% whole bunches and matured in French oak (10% new). A bright crimson red. After a few good few swirls, aromas of ripe raspberries, black cherries, wild herbs and some crushed violets soon emerge. The palate, though, doesn't need much coaxing, and this silken, sappy wine has excellent depth and persistence. Will be even better six to 12 months from now. Drink from: 2024. Drink by: 2030. Special Value. Score - 96. (Philip Rich, winecompanion.com.au, April 29, 2024)

St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon 2020Coonawarra, South Australia 0031441 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $48.00 TASTING NOTE : This is a very good St Hugo. There's a decent amount of oak but it feels in check - the fruit has so much juiciness and run that the oak helps to keep it bedded. It's a mulberried, curranty, minty release with eucalypt top notes, apple-like acidity, and excellent spread to the tannin. The chalkiness of the finish, inlaid with juicy fruit, is the key to the wine's quality. It's not a massive release in terms of intensity, but it's above medium weight and it's lengthy. Drink from: 2027. Drink by: 2042. Score - 95. (Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 2, 2023)

André Goichot Clos De Verger Pommard 1er Cru 2020AC 0041398 (XD) 14% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $104.00 TASTING NOTE : Intense and nostalgic on the nose, with a deep core of red cherries, Grenadine, Gala apple, cherry skin, crushed rose petals, wild mint and tossed earth that are enveloped in lush red berry, clove and peppercorn. Pervasive and persistent tannins remain steady on the palate after a wash of acidity. A curious tartness capitulates the finish. Score - 94. (Anna-Christina Cabrales, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 1, 2023)

Domaine Barraud Clos la Verchère La Maréchaude Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru 2022
Domaine Barraud Clos la Verchère La Maréchaude Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru 2022AC 0041389 (XD) 12% Alc./Vol. 750 mL $65.00 TASTING NOTE : The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos la Verchère La Maréchaude 1er Cru comes from limestone and [marl] soils that Julien Barraud explained are structured like a millefeuille for six meters, ergo, very resistant to hydric stress. This has a precise and focused bouquet with yellow fruit, lanolin, desiccated orange peel and pressed white flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a very elegant opening. The purity is striking, with perfectly pitched acidity and a persistent, quite mineral-driven finish. This will be irresistible, yet it will age for many years. Drinking window: 2025-2045. Score - 93-95. (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Aug. 17, 2023)
