Nose: no apologies that the huge personality is ladled on with a trowel, though the elements are much more delicately proportioned. A mixing of treacle and Manuka honey is only the start: the spices are sprinkled in just so, but there is a meaty, earthy element also: a kind of menacing beauty...; Taste: this is where it comes into its own: the oils are profound carrying not just intense corn but the complex roastiness of the oak, the Peruvian coffee in particularly fine fettle. But the Manuka honey, Demerara sugars and liquorice quickly follow in its footsteps and before too long the dance is in perfect harmony; Finish: dries as the oak pulses. Toasty with drying hickory and scurrying spices; Balance: I well remember the first Stagg Junior I encountered. Which though truly excellent, skimped a little too much on the sugars and struggled to find its balance and, thus, full potential. Certainly no such worries with this bottling: indeed, the honey is remarkable for its abundance. Staggering... 64.75% (129.5 proof) Score - 96. (Jim Murray, Whisky Bible, 2019)
